Sugarcane crop in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan is grown on an area of more o less 100,000 hectares annually. The province is characterized by having two distinct sugarcane growing zones namely northern and southern sugarcane belts. Northern sugarcane belt includes districts Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Nowshera, Swabi and Malakand while southern sugarcane belt comprises of Kohat, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan.
However, per acre yield of the crop is far less than the provinces of Punjab and Sind. It can be attributed to two main aspect of sugarcane production: lack of improved high yielding and quality sugarcane varieties with the farmers and their lack of awareness of the modern sugarcane production technology.
Sugar Crops Research Institute, Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, since its inception in 1952 has released many varieties of sugarcane which not only give higher tonnage but also higher sugar recoveries than the traditional varieties present at farmers' fields.
For reaching out to the farmers with information on new sugarcane varieties and production technologies, the institute launched a website at http://www. scri.gkp.pk in 2016. However, owing the sudden rush of mobile smart phones in the country and the province, a need was felt to develop an android app for the farmers of the area to provide them requisite information from the ease of their smart phones.
Sugarcane Farming - SCRI is an android app developed in urdu and covers many aspects of sugarcane crop production technology like:
- Improved Sugarcane varieties developed and available at Sugar Crops Research Institute, Mardan.
- Sugarcane cultivation methods right from sowing to harvesting.
- Information about diseases and insects prevailing in the sugarcane growing belts of the province.
- A crop calculator which takes area of the land as input and calculates seed, FYM, fertilizers and pesticides at one go.
- Information about making good gur and best practices in the ghanis to ensure good quality gur production.
- An introduction to chip bud technique of planting sugarcane to save input cost.
- Information about mushroom production as a side business along with farming sugarcane crop.
The scientists at the institute will always be hungry to hear from you to further improve the app and incorporate your precious input in the app so that it becomes more valuable in the farming community of the province.
